Water every day - the summer habit that's killing your plants

Overwatering doesn't look like overwatering. It looks like a plant that needs more water. The leaves droop, the colour fades, and the anxious gardener reaches for the watering can - again - and drives the plant a little further into trouble. The belief behind this is everywhere: that a responsible gardener waters every plant, every day, throughout summer, because heat means thirst and thirst means daily watering. It arrives as inherited wisdom at the garden centre till, as half-remembered advice from a parent or grandparent, and as a very reasonable-sounding instinct when the soil in July looks dry and the borders look tired.

The kernel of truth that keeps it alive is real: summer heat does increase water loss through the soil and through the leaves, so plants genuinely need more water overall in summer than in winter. People correctly sense "more water in summer" and then overshoot into "water constantly, on a fixed schedule, regardless of what the soil is actually doing" - and that is where the advice goes wrong.

The verdict

Myth - as a blanket rule. Daily watering on a fixed schedule is not sound horticulture for most garden plants. It is, in many cases, the thing that kills them.

The RHS is unambiguous on the underlying error. In Watering Plants Wisely, it states: "Avoid a routine such as 'watering once a week'" - because plants need different amounts depending on the weather, soil type, stage of establishment and size. The right question is not how often, but whether this specific plant, in this specific soil, needs water right now - and the only way to answer that is to check, not to consult a calendar.

The reason daily watering fails plants is mechanistic. Soil is not solid: it is full of tiny air pockets that roots rely on for oxygen. Constant watering fills those pockets with water instead of air. A peer-reviewed review of the horticultural literature - "A review of soil waterlogging impacts, mechanisms, and adaptive strategies" (PMC) - confirms that "waterlogging is a major abiotic stress affecting plant growth and productivity". Deprived of oxygen, roots cannot respire properly. The plant wilts. And here the trap closes: the RHS warns in How to Help a Poorly Houseplant that "overwatering can also cause wilting" - the same symptom as underwatering, so the instinctive response is to water more, and the plant is driven further into the airless, oxygen-starved state that invites the fungal and oomycete pathogens - Pythium, Phytophthora and similar - responsible for root rot. Root rot is frequently fatal, and it begins with kindness.

The mechanism runs directly counter to the myth's assumption: it is not drought that kills most garden and container plants, it is the waterlogged root zone created by watering too often.

What to do instead

Replace "water every day" with "check, then water deeply and infrequently".

The first step is always to test before watering. Push a finger or trowel 10-15 cm into the soil - or, in a container, lift the pot to feel its weight. If it is still damp at that depth, hold off. This takes ten seconds and removes most of the guesswork.

When watering is genuinely needed, water thoroughly. Enough water to soak the root zone, not just dampen the surface. This trains roots to grow deeper and become more drought-resilient, rather than staying shallow and dependent on daily top-ups. The RHS is clear that watering should be delivered at the base of the plant, at soil level, not over the foliage - this reduces the risk of fungal disease.

For established garden plants - those that have been in the ground for a year or more - watering once every seven to ten days in a normal UK summer is often sufficient, and sometimes not at all after good rain. The exact interval depends on soil type, sun exposure, and the plant in question, which is precisely why a fixed daily rule does not work.

A 5 cm layer of mulch over the root zone, applied in late autumn to early spring, measurably reduces moisture loss from the soil surface across the following seasons - one of the most effective ways to water less without stressing the plants.

For newly planted trees, the Woodland Trust recommends that "newly planted trees are given 50 litres of water per week" during summer for their first three years - a substantial commitment, but a weekly one, not a daily one, and best delivered in one or two deep soakings rather than daily sprinkles. Fifty litres in a single thorough watering does far more for root development than the same volume spread across seven shallow ones.

Believe this, not that

Believe this:

  • Water deeply and let the soil dry out somewhat between waterings, for most established plants.
  • Check actual soil moisture at root depth before deciding to water.
  • Wilting leaves can mean either too little water or too much - check the soil before assuming drought.
  • Pots and containers need more frequent checking than open ground, because they dry faster and have less buffering capacity.
  • Good drainage - holes in pots, well-structured soil - is what makes more frequent watering safe when it is genuinely needed.

Not that:

  • Water a little bit, every single day, "just in case".
  • Water on a fixed daily or weekly schedule regardless of conditions.
  • Assume a droopy plant always needs more water.
  • Apply the same watering rule to a border shrub and a hanging basket.
  • Water heavily into a container or bed with poor drainage and assume the excess will simply "go somewhere".

Context and caveats

The verdict shifts in a handful of genuine situations, and it is worth knowing which ones.

Containers, hanging baskets, and window boxes are a real exception. Their small soil volume and exposure on all sides mean they can dry out fast enough to need watering once - or even twice - a day in a genuine UK heatwave. There simply is not enough compost mass to hold reserves. The answer is still to check before watering, but checking may well confirm that water is needed every day.

Seedlings and very recent transplants are another case where more frequent attention is warranted. Shallow, undeveloped root systems mean the surface must be kept consistently moist until roots establish. Daily checking is appropriate here, even if daily watering is not always the result.

Soil type changes the interval significantly. Free-draining, sandy, or very light soils dry out faster than heavy clay, so the gap between waterings needs to be shorter - again a case for checking rather than applying a fixed rule.

In very hot, prolonged dry spells or in areas under a drought declaration, more frequent watering of vulnerable specimens may be justified. Water companies' Temporary Use Bans can restrict how that water is applied regardless of what the plant needs - current local restrictions are always worth checking before reaching for the hosepipe.

Questions people actually ask

The question that comes up most often is how to tell overwatering from underwatering when both cause wilting. The answer is in the soil, not the leaves: push a finger or trowel 10-15 cm down. If the soil is still damp or wet, the wilt is far more likely to be from waterlogging than drought. Soggy, dark-coloured compost in a pot that smells faintly earthy or sour is a strong indicator that root rot may already have taken hold. At that stage, the pot needs to dry out - not receive more water - and any badly rotted roots should be trimmed away before repotting into fresh, well-draining compost.

People also ask whether daily watering is harmful to all plants or only some. The honest answer is that it is harmful to most established garden plants and to anything growing in poorly drained conditions, but it is genuinely appropriate for containers in hot weather and for seedlings and new transplants. The distinction is not the plant species so much as the root zone size and the drainage available.

Mulching is another frequent question - whether it really makes a meaningful difference to watering frequency. It does. A 5 cm layer over the root zone reduces evaporation from the soil surface, moderates soil temperature, and suppresses the weeds that compete for moisture. The cumulative effect across a season is significant, and it is one of the most straightforward ways to reduce the workload of summer watering.

On hosepipe bans: these are issued by water companies as Temporary Use Bans and restrict garden watering by hosepipe or sprinkler. Watering by hand with a can is generally still permitted, but the specific terms vary by supplier and by the level of restriction in force. Checking with the relevant water company before a ban takes effect - rather than after - avoids both wasted effort and potential fines.
