The crocks myth: does a drainage layer at the bottom of a pot actually help?
Reach for the broken flowerpot before you fill a container and you are in good company - and, it turns out, quietly working against your plants. The habit of laying a layer of crocks - broken clay pot pieces, stones, or gravel - across the base of a container before adding compost is one of the most durable pieces of gardening lore in circulation. It appears in old potting guides, on plant labels, and in the advice passed from one generation of gardeners to the next. The intuition behind it is genuinely reasonable: coarse gravel drains quickly on its own, so a coarse layer at the bottom of a pot feels as though it must give water an easy exit. That logic is understandable. It is just not how water behaves once fine compost sits on top of a coarser material.
The verdict
Myth. A layer of crocks does not improve drainage in a container. In most cases it makes conditions worse for the roots, not better.
The mechanism is a perched water table. Water in compost is held by capillary - or matric - forces in the fine pore spaces between compost particles. It will not cross from fine material into a coarser layer beneath until the compost immediately above that boundary is fully saturated. The crocks do not pull water downward; instead, the saturated zone simply sits, or "perches", on top of them. Adding a coarse layer therefore does two unhelpful things at once: it shortens the column of well-aerated compost the roots can use, and it lifts the wettest, most oxygen-starved zone higher up the pot - closer to where the roots actually are. Because roots need air in the pore spaces to function, moving the saturated layer towards them is the opposite of what the gardener intended.
The authoritative UK verdict is unambiguous. The Royal Horticultural Society, in its published advice attributed to Leigh Hunt, Principal Horticultural Advisor, states plainly: "Gardeners have long believed that crocks in pots improve drainage, but this is false." The RHS explains the reason as "Disrupted capillary action and reduced soil volume mean they don't help", and recommends that "gardeners can use a crock to prevent the compost from dropping through the hole at the bottom of the pot." University horticulture research reaches the same conclusion. The UC Master Gardeners, University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources, are direct: "Gravitational water will not move from a fine textured soil into a coarser soil until the finer soil is saturated." Their recommendation follows logically: "Fill the container from bottom to top with a well-drained potting soil, and don't block the drain hole." Dr Linda Chalker-Scott of Washington State University Extension, writing in "The Myth of Drainage Material in Container Plantings", puts it plainly: "This is just one of those myths that refuses to die, regardless of solid scientific evidence to the contrary." One fair nuance is worth adding. A peer-reviewed controlled study published in PLOS ONE in 2025 - "Effect of drainage layers on water retention of potting media in containers" - found that a coarse basal layer is unlikely to worsen drainage and, in some deeper-container configurations, modestly improved it, particularly where thicker layers were used. (PLOS ONE, 2025) That nuance is worth stating honestly: the simple "always worse" version of the verdict slightly overreaches. But the 2025 study does not rescue the original claim for the typical patio pot. For ordinary container growing, a crock layer is at best unnecessary and at worst reduces the aerated compost depth roots can use. The practices that reliably help drainage remain unchanged.
What to do instead
Fill the container with a good, free-draining peat-free potting compost from the base right to the top, with no crock layer beneath it. Make sure the pot has adequate drainage holes and keep them clear. A single crock, or a small square of perforated mesh, laid over each drainage hole is entirely sensible - its job is to stop compost washing out, and that is the only job a crock should do.
For plants that genuinely need sharp drainage - alpines, Mediterranean herbs, succulents - the approach that actually works is to mix horticultural grit or perlite through the whole body of the compost, up to about a third by volume. Concentrating drainage material in a band at the base does not achieve the same effect; distributing it throughout does.
Stand the pot on feet, tiles, or a couple of bricks so that water leaving the drainage holes can escape freely and the base is not sitting in a pool of standing water. If a saucer is used, tip it out after heavy rain or watering - a pot sitting in standing water cannot drain at all, whatever is inside it.
Matching the pot size to the plant matters too. An over-large container holds a large reservoir of wet compost that a small root system cannot draw on, and the excess stays wet far longer than it should.
Believe this, not that
What is true:
- Water will not drain from fine compost into a coarse layer below until the compost above is fully saturated, so a crock layer raises the wet zone rather than removing it.
- The way to sharpen drainage in a container is to amend the whole compost with horticultural grit or perlite, mixed throughout.
- A single crock or square of mesh placed over the drainage hole earns its place by keeping compost in - that is a sensible use of a crock.
- Clear drainage holes and a pot raised on feet are what allow a container to drain properly.
What is not true:
- That gravel at the base of a pot gives water an easy exit.
- That a drainage layer at the bottom does the same job as grit mixed throughout the compost.
- That more crocks mean better drainage - a deeper layer only costs more rooting depth.
- That a pot standing in a full saucer can drain at all.
Context and caveats
The verdict applies to ordinary container growing - the patio pot, the balcony planter, the doorstep terracotta. A single crock or mesh square over the drainage hole to retain compost is not what the myth is about; that use is sensible and unaffected by any of this.
In a very deep container, a shallow coarse layer costs proportionally less usable depth, which is why many gardeners who have always used crocks in tall pots report no obvious problem. The 2025 PLOS ONE study adds weight to this: in deeper containers with thicker drainage layers, the effect on drainage was neutral to modestly positive. That is a real limit to the simple version of the myth. The honest position is that for a shallow or medium-depth pot - the most common kind - a crock layer is not doing what it is supposed to do, and may be shortening the rooting zone. For a deep container, the cost is smaller and the harm less clear. What does not change in any configuration is that mixing grit or perlite through the compost, keeping holes clear, and raising the pot off the ground are the practices that reliably work.
Questions people actually ask
A common question is whether anything needs to go in the bottom of a pot at all. The answer is: only a single crock or a square of mesh over the drainage hole, to stop compost washing through. Nothing more is needed or helpful.
Related to that is the worry that compost will simply fall out of the holes. A little may wash through at first; a crock or mesh over the hole prevents it without requiring a full basal layer. The hole-covering job and the "drainage layer" job are quite different things, and only the first one is real.
Gardeners whose plants in crocked pots appear perfectly healthy sometimes wonder why they should change anything. Many plants do tolerate the arrangement, particularly in deep pots where the lost depth is small. The point is not that crocks are causing obvious damage in every case; it is that they are not providing the drainage benefit they were added for. The plants are doing well despite the crocks, not because of them.
For plants that genuinely need sharper drainage - succulents, alpines, thyme, rosemary, and similar - the effective approach is to mix horticultural grit or perlite through the whole volume of compost, raise the pot on feet, and ensure the drainage holes are open and free.
