Vitis vinifera 'Dattier de Beyrouth'
Vitis vinifera 'Dattier de Beyrouth'
Common name: Dattier de Beyrouth Grape
Description: This ancient Lebanese grape variety is prized for its unique elongated, finger-like fruits that resemble dates, hence its name meaning 'Date of Beirut'. The large, golden-amber grapes hang in loose clusters and ripen in late summer to early autumn, offering a sweet, honey-like flavour with crisp flesh. The attractive palmate leaves provide lush coverage throughout the growing season before developing stunning yellow and orange autumn tints. This vigorous climber produces inconspicuous but fragrant flowers in early summer. 'Dattier de Beyrouth' is an excellent choice for south-facing walls or heated glasshouses in cooler areas, where it reliably produces its distinctive and delicious fruits.
Other benefits: unique elongated fruit shape, sweet honey flavour, ornamental autumn foliage, heritage variety, vigorous growth
Wildlife attraction: bees, butterflies, pollinators, birds (attracted to ripe fruit)
Height & spread (approx.) at 10 years: 5m x 3m (when trained)
Position: full sun essential; requires a very warm, sheltered south-facing wall or glasshouse for reliable cropping
Soil pH: adaptable; prefers neutral to slightly alkaline soils; thrives in chalky conditions
Moisture: moderate to high watering during growing season; requires well-drained soil; reduce water as fruits ripen
Winter hardiness: hardy to -10°C; best performance with winter protection or under glass in colder regions
