x Cuprocyparis leylandii 'Pyramidalis'
Common name: Pyramidal Leyland Cypress
Description: This naturally narrow form of Leyland Cypress offers all the vigorous growth and screening benefits of the species but with a more refined, columnar habit. The dense, feathery foliage is a rich blue-green colour, creating an attractive evergreen backdrop throughout the year. Unlike the common Leyland Cypress, 'Pyramidalis' maintains a tighter, more upright form with less spreading, making it ideal for creating formal hedges, screens, or vertical accents in narrower spaces. The fine-textured foliage responds well to trimming and creates a solid, impenetrable barrier. This cultivar is particularly useful where rapid screening is needed but space is limited.
Other benefits: evergreen foliage, fast-growing screening, narrow upright habit saves space, excellent wind tolerance, low maintenance once established
Wildlife attraction: nesting birds, shelter for wildlife
Height & spread (approx.) at 10 years: 6m x 1.5m
Position: full sun to partial shade; tolerates exposed positions
Soil pH: highly adaptable; grows in acidic, neutral, or alkaline soils
Moisture: moderate watering when establishing; drought tolerant once established; prefers well-drained soil but tolerates various conditions
Winter hardiness: fully hardy to -20°C and below
