Common name: Soft Shield Fern

Description: This elegant native British fern is one of the finest evergreen ferns for the garden, producing graceful shuttlecocks of delicate, finely divided fronds. The soft, lace-like foliage emerges in spring as pale green unfurling croziers that gradually expand into arching fronds up to 1m long. Each frond is bipinnate, meaning it is twice-divided, creating an intricate feathery appearance with a soft texture that gives the plant its common name. The fronds are dark green with a slight sheen and remain attractive throughout winter, providing valuable evergreen structure in shady areas. Unlike many ferns, the soft shield fern tolerates a wide range of conditions and is remarkably adaptable. Small plantlets often develop along the midribs of mature fronds, which can be detached and grown on. This fern creates a refined, woodland atmosphere and combines beautifully with other shade-loving perennials, bulbs, and hellebores.
