Description: This dramatic evergreen shrub produces spectacular red camellia blooms that create a bold statement from late winter through to spring. The flowers range from rich crimson to deep scarlet shades, typically featuring multiple layers of silky petals that form perfect formal or semi-double blooms. Each flower can measure 8-12cm across and stands out brilliantly against the glossy, dark green leathery foliage. Red camellias are particularly striking for their intense colour saturation, bringing vibrant warmth to the garden during the colder months when such bold colours are rare. The evergreen leaves provide year-round architectural structure and create an excellent backdrop for the vivid blooms. Camellias require acidic soil and benefit from a sheltered position protected from early morning sun, which can damage frosted petals. They make outstanding specimens for shady borders, woodland settings, or containers filled with ericaceous compost where their dramatic flowers can be fully appreciated.
