Magnolia 'Susan'
Common name: Magnolia Susan
Description: This stunning deciduous magnolia produces an abundance of dramatic goblet-shaped flowers in rich reddish-purple to deep pink tones. From mid to late spring, upright blooms measuring 10-12cm long appear on bare branches, creating a spectacular display of colour. Each flower features 6 petals that are deep purple-pink on the outside and paler pink inside, creating a beautiful two-tone effect. The flowers have a light, pleasant fragrance and are held upright on the branches like candles. 'Susan' is part of the 'Little Girl' hybrid series, bred for compact growth and late flowering to avoid frost damage. After the main spring flush, the plant often produces sporadic flowers throughout summer. The leaves emerge after flowering, developing into attractive oval foliage that remains handsome through summer. This magnolia forms a compact, upright shrub that is ideal for smaller gardens or mixed borders where its bold flowers can create dramatic impact without overwhelming the space.
