Viburnum tinus 'Gwenllian'

Common name: Gwenllian Laurustinus

Description: This compact viburnum cultivar is a garden treasure, offering exceptional year-round interest with particularly attractive winter flowering. The dense evergreen foliage consists of small, glossy dark green leaves that create a neat, rounded shrub. From late autumn through to spring, the plant produces abundant flat clusters of flowers that open from striking deep pink buds into pale pink-white blooms, creating a two-tone effect that is especially charming. The flowers are lightly fragrant and are followed by metallic blue-black berries in late summer. 'Gwenllian' has a more compact habit than the species, making it perfect for smaller gardens, containers, low hedging, or front-of-border positions where its winter display can be appreciated up close.

Other benefits: evergreen foliage, winter flowering, attractive pink buds, compact habit suitable for small gardens, berries for birds, low maintenance

Wildlife attraction: bees, butterflies, pollinators (especially valuable for winter-active insects), birds (berries)

Height & spread (approx.) at 10 years: 1.2m x 1.2m

Position: full sun to partial shade; flowers best in good light but tolerates shade

Soil pH: adaptable; grows well in neutral to slightly alkaline soils

Moisture: moderate watering; prefers moist but well-drained soil; reasonably drought tolerant once established

Winter hardiness: hardy to -15°C; benefits from shelter from cold winds
