Prunus sargentii
Prunus sargentii
Common name: Sargent's Cherry
Description: This magnificent Japanese flowering cherry is widely regarded as one of the finest ornamental trees for multi-season interest. In early to mid-spring, the tree produces abundant clusters of single, soft pink flowers that create a spectacular display before many other cherries have bloomed. The emerging foliage is bronze-red, providing a beautiful backdrop to the pink blossoms. Throughout summer, the glossy, dark green leaves create attractive coverage. In autumn, Sargent's cherry puts on one of the earliest and most brilliant displays, with foliage turning vivid shades of orange, red, and crimson often as early as September. The polished, mahogany-coloured bark with prominent horizontal lenticels provides exceptional winter interest. The broad, spreading crown creates an impressive presence suitable for larger gardens, parks, or as a stunning specimen tree.
Other benefits: outstanding early autumn colour, beautiful spring blossom, attractive polished bark, bronze new foliage, long-lived tree, excellent specimen for larger spaces, early flowering
Wildlife attraction: bees, butterflies, pollinators (early spring blossom provides valuable nectar)
