Agave macroacantha
Common name: Large-thorned agave
Description: Agave macroacantha is a neat, medium-sized agave producing a compact rosette of narrow, blue-grey leaves tipped with a long, striking black spine — one of the most dramatic terminal spines of any agave. The blue-toned foliage contrasts beautifully with the dark spine, making this an excellent ornamental specimen for a sunny gravel garden or container. It is relatively compact and well-proportioned, making it suitable for smaller spaces.
Other benefits: excellent for containers, architectural specimen, drought tolerant, low maintenance, deer resistant
Height & spread (approx.) at 10 years: 0.5m x 0.6m
Position: Full sun; sheltered and well-drained position; protect from prolonged hard frost
Soil pH: Neutral to slightly alkaline; tolerates poor, free-draining soils
Moisture: Drought tolerant; sharply drained soil essential; avoid winter wet
Winter hardiness: Cold hardy to approximately -5°C; best given protection in harsh winters
