Allium 'Millennium'
Common name: Ornamental onion
Description: Allium 'Millennium' is a compact, clump-forming ornamental onion producing dense, globe-shaped flowerheads of rich rose-pink to soft purple from midsummer well into early autumn — later than most alliums and a real asset in the summer border. Its narrow, glossy green leaves remain tidy throughout the season and resist flopping, and the dried seedheads add further structural interest as the year progresses. A reliable repeat performer that naturalises well in sunny borders and gravel gardens.
Other benefits: long flowering season, drought tolerant once established, good in containers, attractive seedheads
Wildlife attraction: bees and hoverflies are strongly attracted to the nectar-rich flowerheads throughout summer
Height & spread (approx.) at 10 years: 0.4m x 0.3m
Position: full sun; well-drained borders, gravel gardens, and containers
Soil pH: neutral to slightly alkaline; adaptable to most well-drained soils including sandy and chalky
Moisture: low to moderate; drought tolerant once established; excellent drainage essential
