Arundo donax var. versicolor - 5 litre
Common name: Variegated Giant Reed, Striped Arundo
Description: This striking variegated form of the giant reed produces bold, arching stems clothed in broad, strap-shaped leaves beautifully striped in creamy white and green. The foliage creates a dramatic tropical effect, rustling gently in the breeze. In warm summers, tall plume-like flower panicles may appear above the foliage in late summer to autumn. More compact and less vigorous than the plain green species, this variegated cultivar is an excellent choice for adding architectural interest to sheltered borders, waterside plantings, or large containers.
Other benefits: architectural form, tropical appearance, movement and sound in the garden, screening potential
Wildlife attraction: provides shelter for invertebrates and small birds
Height & spread (approx.) at 10 years: 1.8m x 1m
Position: full sun; requires a warm, sheltered position away from cold winds
Soil pH: tolerant of most soils; neutral to slightly alkaline preferred
Moisture: prefers moist to wet soil; excellent near water features or in boggy ground; water regularly in containers
Winter hardiness: borderline hardy to -5°C; mulch crowns heavily in autumn and protect from frost in colder areas
