Bergenia cordifolia - 2 litre
(Full plant info in our Plant Finder)
Common name: Elephant's Ears
Description: This robust evergreen perennial is valued for its bold, architectural foliage and reliable spring flowers. The large, rounded, leathery leaves can reach up to 30cm across, forming substantial clumps of glossy green foliage that provides excellent ground cover throughout the year. In many forms, the leaves develop attractive purple-red tints during winter, adding seasonal colour when little else is performing. From late winter through to mid-spring, sturdy stems emerge carrying dense clusters of nodding, bell-shaped flowers in shades of pink to magenta. The flowers appear above the foliage on red-tinted stems, creating an attractive tiered effect. Bergenia cordifolia is exceptionally tough and adaptable, thriving in positions where many other plants struggle, including dry shade and exposed sites. The evergreen foliage provides year-round structure and weed suppression.
Other benefits: excellent ground cover with weed-suppressing foliage, winter leaf colour, early spring flowers, extremely hardy and adaptable, tolerates dry shade, low maintenance
Wildlife attraction: bees, other early pollinators
Height & spread (approx.) at 10 years: 0.4m x 0.6m
Position: adaptable to full sun, partial shade, or full shade; flowers best with some sun but tolerates deep shade
Soil pH: adaptable to most soils; performs well in neutral to slightly alkaline conditions
Moisture: moderate watering when establishing; very tolerant of dry conditions once established; also tolerates heavy clay soils; prefers well-drained soil but adaptable
Winter hardiness: fully hardy to -20°C
