Betula nigra
An excellent deciduous tree, commonly known as Black birch, for structure and long-term presence, notable for fine autumn tints.
Growing to around 9m tall by 3m wide at 10 years. Happy in full sun, though it tolerates some shade on most soils, and prefers moisture-retentive soil. It produces yellow flowers in winter, spring, with attractive orange bark. Fully hardy throughout the UK and the flowers are a good nectar source for bees.
