Common name: Lucas Hornbeam

Description: This exceptional cultivar of European Hornbeam features a distinctive narrow, columnar growth habit that makes it perfect for limited spaces. 'Lucas' displays the classic deeply veined, serrated leaves characteristic of hornbeam, emerging bright green in spring before darkening to a rich forest green in summer. The foliage develops beautiful golden-yellow to amber autumn colours before falling. In winter, the slender, upright silhouette and smooth grey bark with subtle muscle-like ridges provide elegant structural interest. Unlike the species, 'Lucas' maintains its compact, fastigiate form without extensive pruning, creating a living architectural column in the landscape.

Other benefits: excellent for narrow gardens, formal avenues and screening, tolerates urban conditions, responds well to pruning

Wildlife attraction: birds nest among branches, caterpillars feed on foliage, small mammals eat seeds

Height & spread (approx.) at 10 years: 5m x 1.5m

Position: full sun to partial shade; adaptable to various light conditions

Soil pH: versatile; thrives in neutral to slightly alkaline soils but tolerates mild acidity

Moisture: moderate moisture needs; established plants have good drought tolerance; prefers well-drained but moisture-retentive soil

Winter hardiness: cold hardy to -25°C; excellent resistance to harsh winter conditions
