Carpinus betulus (Hornbeam)

A first-rate deciduous tree, commonly known as Common hornbeam, offering real character in the landscape, notable for fine autumn tints.

Expect it to reach around 8m tall by 6m wide at 10 years. Happy in full sun, though it tolerates some shade on most soils, and grows well in reasonably drained soil and is drought-tolerant once established. Notable for attractive grey bark and green fruits. Fully hardy throughout the UK and the fruits provide food for birds.
