An excellent deciduous climber, commonly known as Virgin's bower, for clothing vertical surfaces, grown for its single, semi-nodding violet-blue flowers in summer, autumn.
It grows to around 2.2m tall with a spread of 2m. Happy in full sun, though it tolerates some shade on most soils, and suits most soils from well-drained to damp. Fully hardy throughout the UK and the flowers are a good nectar source for bees.
