Capsicum annuum 'Zimbabwe Black' (Chilli)
Common name: Zimbabwe Black Chilli
Description: Capsicum annuum 'Zimbabwe Black' is a visually dramatic chilli variety producing clusters of small, upright fruits in deep purple-black, ripening to red at full maturity. The dark colouring of both the fruits and the foliage makes it as ornamental as it is edible, and it performs beautifully in containers and patio displays as well as in the kitchen garden. The heat level is moderate to hot (around 30,000–50,000 SHU), with a good depth of flavour. The purple flowers add further interest to an already highly decorative plant.
Other benefits: highly ornamental as well as edible; deep purple-black fruits and attractive foliage; excellent in containers; moderate to hot heat level
Wildlife attraction: bees and other pollinating insects
Height & spread (approx.) at maturity: 45–60cm x 45cm
Position: full sun; patio containers or warm sheltered border; also excellent under glass
Soil pH: slightly acid to neutral (pH 6.0–7.0); fertile, well-drained soil or compost
Moisture: regular watering required; high-potash liquid feed once flowering begins; avoid waterlogging
Winter hardiness: frost tender; grow as an annual from spring
