Capsicum chinense 'Habanero Chocolate' (Chilli)
Common name: Chocolate Habanero Chilli
Description: Capsicum chinense 'Habanero Chocolate' is a striking and intensely hot chilli producing lantern-shaped fruits that ripen to a deep, rich chocolate-brown. With a Scoville rating of 300,000–450,000 SHU, it is considerably hotter than the orange habanero, but the heat is accompanied by a distinctly rich, smoky, almost earthy flavour with fruity undertones that has made it a favourite among serious chilli enthusiasts and hot sauce makers. The unusual deep brown colouring of the fruits is also highly ornamental, making it an attractive as well as productive container plant.
Other benefits: rich, smoky flavour alongside intense heat; unusual deep chocolate-brown fruits; highly ornamental; excellent for hot sauces
Wildlife attraction: bees and other pollinating insects
Height & spread (approx.) at maturity: 60–90cm x 60cm
Position: full sun; best under glass or in a warm, sheltered outdoor position
Soil pH: slightly acid to neutral (pH 6.0–7.0); fertile, well-drained soil or compost
Moisture: regular watering required; high-potash liquid feed once flowering begins; avoid waterlogging
Winter hardiness: frost tender; grow as an annual from spring
