Heuchera 'Obsidian'
Common name: Coral Bells 'Obsidian'
Description: This dramatic cultivar is renowned for having some of the darkest foliage in the entire Heuchera genus, with large, rounded leaves in deep glossy black-purple that appears almost black in certain lights. The substantial semi-evergreen foliage has a lustrous, polished quality reminiscent of the volcanic glass from which it takes its name. The leaves maintain their exceptional dark colouration throughout the growing season without fading. In early summer, tall stems bearing sprays of small creamy-white flowers emerge, creating a striking architectural contrast against the near-black foliage. This is an outstanding choice for creating drama and sophistication in shaded borders, providing unmatched contrast when planted alongside lighter-leaved companions or silver foliage plants.
Other benefits: darkest available Heuchera foliage, excellent for contrast planting, year-round interest, vigorous growth, low maintenance
Wildlife attraction: bees, butterflies, hummingbird hawk-moths, pollinators
Height & spread (approx.) at 10 years: 0.4m x 0.5m
Position: partial shade to full shade; some light enhances the glossy sheen
Soil pH: adaptable to most soils; performs best in neutral to slightly acidic conditions
Moisture: moderate watering required; prefers consistently moist but well-drained soil; benefits from mulching
Winter hardiness: very cold hardy to -20°C
