Hydrangea - Blue
Common name: Hydrangea
Description: Blue hydrangeas are among the most popular and dramatic summer-flowering shrubs available in British gardens, producing large, rounded or lacecap flowerheads in shades of pure blue that are maintained best in acid conditions. The flowers appear from midsummer and gradually fade to antique shades of blue-green and pink as autumn progresses, extending the season of interest. The large, glossy, paired leaves provide a handsome backdrop throughout summer.
Other benefits: spectacular summer flowerheads, long season of interest as flowers fade to antique tones, excellent for pots and borders, reliable in sheltered gardens
Wildlife attraction: Bees and hoverflies visit the flowerheads throughout summer.
Height & spread (approx.) at 10 years: 1.5m x 1.5–2m
Position: Partial shade to full sun; best in a sheltered spot with protection from cold, drying winds and late frosts.
Soil pH: Acid to neutral; blue flower colour is best maintained in acid soils (pH below 6). Add ericaceous compost when planting in containers, or use a blueing agent regularly.
Moisture: Keep consistently moist; hydrangeas are thirsty plants and will wilt rapidly if allowed to dry out. Water generously in hot weather.
Winter hardiness: Hardy to -15°C (H5); fully frost-hardy in most UK regions but protect emerging flower buds from late frosts.
