Description: This renowned Serbian cultivar is widely considered one of the finest quinces for both ornamental and culinary purposes, producing exceptionally large, pear-shaped fruits that can weigh up to 500g each. The fruits ripen in late autumn to a beautiful golden-yellow colour and release an intense, sweet fragrance that perfumes entire rooms. The flesh is particularly aromatic and cooks to a lovely deep pink-orange colour, producing superior jellies, preserves, and the traditional Spanish membrillo. In late spring, the tree is covered in large, shell-pink flowers that are highly ornamental and delicately scented. The twisted, gnarled branches develop attractive character with age, and the large felted leaves provide good structure through summer. This is a self-fertile variety requiring no pollination partner, and demonstrates excellent vigour and productivity. 'Vranja' has been cherished in European gardens since the 19th century and remains the benchmark against which other quinces are judged.
