Details
A handsome deciduous large shrub or small tree that makes a fine specimen in the garden, notable for fine autumn tints and an impressive crop of bright orange fruit.
Reaching around 3–4m tall and wide at maturity. Happy in full sun on most soils, growing well in reasonably drained fertile ground. Reliably hardy across most of the UK and particularly productive in a warm, sheltered position.
- Large fruit, rounded with a slightly flattened base and clean shiny skin
- Skin is yellow-orange, deepening to rich orange when fully ripe
- Flesh is firm with a delicate, sweet taste — can be eaten while still firm
- Non-astringent variety, no need to wait for the fruit to soften
- Good autumn leaf colour of orange and red; fruit can remain on the tree after leaf fall
- Prefers loamy soil in full sun, but will grow in most well-drained conditions
- Harvest season typically from October to December
- Self-fertile and does not require cross-pollination
The 'Jiro' persimmon is valued for its ornamental appeal and reliable crop of large, sweet, easy-to-eat fruit — one of the best non-astringent varieties for UK gardens.
