Diospyros kaki 'Muscat' (non-astringent Persimmon)
A handsome deciduous large shrub or small tree that makes a fine specimen in the garden, notable for fine autumn tints and a crop of aromatic, reddish-orange fruit with an exceptionally sweet, fragrant flavour.
Reaching around 3–4m tall and wide at maturity. Happy in full sun on most soils, growing well in reasonably drained fertile ground. Reliably hardy across most of the UK and particularly productive in a warm, sheltered position.
Key details about Diospyros kaki 'Muscat':
- Rounded fruit, approximately 5–6cm in diameter
- Skin has a reddish-orange hue when fully ripe
- Flesh is soft and extremely sweet, with pronounced floral and fruity notes reminiscent of muscat grapes
- Non-astringent variety — can be eaten while still firm
- Originated in Japan; a popular cultivar grown both domestically and exported internationally
- Harvest season typically from October to November
- Self-fertile and does not require cross-pollination
The 'Muscat' persimmon is prized for its exceptional fragrance and sweet, complex flavour — a distinctive and rewarding non-astringent variety that stands out from other persimmons for its muscat-toned aromatic quality.
