Details
A handsome deciduous large shrub or small tree that makes a fine specimen in the garden, notable for fine autumn tints and a reliable crop of large, firm fruit with excellent storage qualities.
Reaching around 3–4m tall and wide at maturity. Happy in full sun on most soils, growing well in reasonably drained fertile ground. Reliably hardy across most of the UK and particularly productive in a warm, sheltered position.
Key details about Diospyros kaki 'Tipo':
- Large fruit, spherical with a slightly flattened top
- Skin is yellow, turning orange as the fruit ripens
- Flesh is crisp and astringent; fruit remains firm when ripe and continues to soften after harvest
- Sweet, firm fruit with good keeping qualities — stores well once picked
- Traditional Italian variety, now grown across many regions
- Good resistance to cold and produces high yields
- Harvest season typically from October to November
- Self-fertile and does not require cross-pollination
The 'Tipo' persimmon is valued for its large, long-storing fruit and reliable high yields — an excellent astringent variety with a long tradition of cultivation in southern Europe.
