Magnolia 'Galaxy'
Common name: Magnolia 'Galaxy'
Description: Magnolia 'Galaxy' is an impressive deciduous magnolia raised at the US National Arboretum, producing large, striking goblet-shaped flowers in rich rosy-pink to deep rose-purple on the exterior in mid to late spring — the later flowering time compared to many magnolias helps reduce the risk of frost damage. It develops a strong, upright, pyramidal habit that makes it suitable for use as a freestanding specimen tree or in more formal landscape settings. The flowers are produced in impressive numbers and have a light fragrance, and the handsome foliage provides attractive summer cover.
Other benefits: later flowering reduces frost damage risk; upright pyramidal habit; lightly fragrant; bold flower colour
Wildlife attraction: bees and other pollinating insects
Height & spread (approx.) at 10 years: 6m x 4m
Position: full sun to partial shade; sheltered from cold winds; excellent as a freestanding specimen
Soil pH: neutral to acid (pH 5.5–7.0); fertile, well-drained but moisture-retentive soil
Moisture: moderate; mulch well and water during dry periods until established
Winter hardiness: fully hardy to -20°C
