Magnolia stellata 'Rosea'
Common name: Pink Star Magnolia
Description: Magnolia stellata 'Rosea' is a delightful compact deciduous shrub producing masses of elegant, multi-petalled star-shaped flowers in soft blush-pink to pale rose — a charming alternative to the pure white of the species. The flowers appear on bare stems in late winter to early spring, often from late February onwards, and have a light, sweet fragrance. Like all stellata forms, 'Rosea' is slow-growing and densely branched, making it an excellent choice for smaller gardens, raised beds, and large containers where space is limited.
Other benefits: soft pink colouring; lightly fragrant; compact and slow-growing; suitable for containers; one of the earliest flowering magnolias
Wildlife attraction: bees and early-emerging pollinating insects — a valuable early nectar source
Height & spread (approx.) at 10 years: 2m x 1.5m
Position: full sun to partial shade; sheltered from cold winds and late frosts which can damage early flowers
Soil pH: neutral to acid (pH 5.5–7.0); fertile, moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil
Moisture: moderate; water well until established; mulch annually to retain moisture and protect roots
Winter hardiness: fully hardy to -20°C
