Magnolia 'Yellow Lantern'
Common name: Magnolia 'Yellow Lantern'
Description: Magnolia 'Yellow Lantern' is a distinctive deciduous magnolia producing upright, lantern-shaped goblet flowers in a rich, warm yellow in mid-spring — later than many magnolias, which helps protect the blooms from late frost damage. The flowers are held semi-erect on the branches, giving the plant its evocative name, and they are produced in good numbers on an upright, vase-shaped tree of pleasing proportions. The colour is deeper and more saturated than Magnolia 'Elizabeth', and the upright habit makes it a particularly effective specimen for narrower planting situations. A first-rate yellow magnolia for UK gardens.
Other benefits: later flowering reduces frost risk; upright vase-shaped habit for narrower spaces; deeper yellow than most; reliable spring display
Wildlife attraction: bees and other pollinating insects
Height & spread (approx.) at 10 years: 5m x 3m
Position: full sun to partial shade; sheltered from cold winds; effective as a freestanding specimen tree
Soil pH: neutral to acid (pH 5.5–7.0); fertile, well-drained but moisture-retentive soil
Moisture: moderate; mulch well and water during dry periods until established
Winter hardiness: fully hardy to -20°C
