Morus alba 'Pendula' (Mulberry)
Common name: Weeping white mulberry
Description: The weeping white mulberry is a graceful, architectural ornamental tree, usually grown as a grafted standard with long, pendulous branches that cascade down to ground level, forming a domed canopy of deeply lobed, glossy green leaves. In late summer it produces small, sweet, white to pale-pink fruits, though it is valued primarily as a sculptural specimen that brings movement, shade, and year-round structure to a garden. The yellow autumn colour and the distinctive weeping silhouette make it a striking feature even after leaf fall.
Other benefits: striking year-round form, provides dappled summer shade, low maintenance once established, suitable for smaller gardens, good autumn colour
Wildlife attraction: Ripe fruits provide a summer food source for blackbirds and other fruit-eating birds.
Height & spread (approx.) at 10 years: 2–2.5m x 2.5–3m (grafted weeping standard)
Position: Full sun to partial shade; a sheltered position helps preserve the weeping form and encourages fruiting.
Soil pH: Neutral; tolerant of most well-drained garden soils including sandy, loamy, and chalky types.
Moisture: Moderate; water well while establishing. Drought-tolerant once mature.
Winter hardiness: Fully hardy to -20°C (H6).
