Morus alba 'Platanifolia' (Mulberry)
Common name: Large-leaved white mulberry
Description: 'Platanifolia' is the large-leaved form of white mulberry, grown primarily for its strikingly large, broadly unlobed leaves — resembling those of a plane tree (Platanus) — which can reach up to 30cm across on vigorous shoots, creating a bold, almost tropical effect. It is a fast-growing, spreading deciduous tree that has long been cultivated as the traditional food plant for silkworms, and it also produces small, sweet white fruits in summer. The large, lush foliage turns a clear yellow in autumn.
Other benefits: fast-growing, dramatic architectural foliage, traditional silkworm food plant, provides dense shade, edible fruit, good autumn colour
Wildlife attraction: Ripe fruits attract blackbirds and other fruit-eating birds.
Height & spread (approx.) at 10 years: 6–7m x 5–6m
Position: Full sun in an open position with room to spread; sheltered from strong, drying winds.
Soil pH: Neutral; adaptable to most well-drained soils including sandy, loamy, and chalky types.
Moisture: Moderate; drought-tolerant once well established, though regular watering aids establishment.
Winter hardiness: Fully hardy to -20°C (H6).
