Common name: Rhododendron 'Cunningham's White'

Description: Rhododendron 'Cunningham's White' is one of the most widely grown, long-established, and thoroughly reliable of all hardy hybrid rhododendrons, with a history of cultivation in British gardens stretching back to the nineteenth century and a reputation for adaptability, toughness, and dependable performance that few other rhododendrons can match. In late spring, the compact, rounded trusses of widely funnel-shaped flowers open in a clean, pure white flushed with the palest lilac-pink, each bloom marked with a subtle greenish-yellow to ochre spotting in the throat that provides a delicate and refined accent against the pale petals. The overall effect is one of fresh, cool elegance that associates beautifully with the fresh greens of the spring garden and complements bolder-coloured rhododendrons and azaleas with great ease, making 'Cunningham's White' a particularly valuable component of a mixed ericaceous planting scheme. The handsome, evergreen foliage is mid to dark green, of good substance and a neat, broadly lance-shaped form, providing a tidy and attractive year-round backdrop of solid structural value. 'Cunningham's White' is notably more tolerant of less than ideal conditions than many rhododendrons — including greater resilience to slightly less acid soils, exposed positions, and urban environments — a practical versatility that has contributed enormously to its enduring and widespread popularity over many generations of British gardeners. It develops into a compact, well-branched, and reliably floriferous shrub that is suitable for gardens of most sizes and styles.

Other benefits: one of the hardiest and most adaptable of all rhododendrons; greater tolerance of less acid soils and exposed positions than many hybrids; clean white flowers with delicate throat markings; attractive year-round evergreen foliage; compact and tidy habit; long-established and thoroughly proven in UK gardens; excellent in mixed ericaceous planting schemes

Wildlife attraction: bumblebees and other large-bodied pollinators

Height & spread (approx.) at 10 years: 1.5m x 1.5m

Position: partial shade preferred; more tolerant of open, exposed positions than most rhododendrons; shelter from the coldest, most desiccating winds is still beneficial; avoid frost pockets where late frosts may damage emerging flower trusses

Soil pH: performs best in acid to neutral soils; pH 4.5–6.5; notably more tolerant of near-neutral conditions than many rhododendrons though will not thrive in alkaline or chalky soils; benefits from the incorporation of ericaceous compost and composted bark at planting

Moisture: regular watering required, particularly when establishing and during dry spells; prefers consistently moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil; a deep mulch of composted bark helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and maintain soil acidity; avoid waterlogging

Winter hardiness: fully hardy to approximately -20°C; one of the hardiest rhododendrons available and thoroughly reliable throughout the UK including in colder, more exposed regions
