Rhododendron 'Van'

Common name: Rhododendron 'Van'

Description: Rhododendron 'Van' is a outstanding and free-flowering hybrid rhododendron that has built a loyal following amongst British gardeners for its exceptionally prolific and colourful spring display, reliable constitution, and attractively compact habit that makes it a practical and rewarding choice for gardens of a wide range of sizes. In mid to late spring, the plant produces an abundance of well-formed, rounded trusses packed with widely funnel-shaped flowers in a rich and vibrant rose-pink to deep pink, each bloom frequently marked with a subtle darker spotting or flare towards the centre that adds a pleasing depth and complexity to the overall floral display. The sheer quantity of trusses produced by a well-established plant can be quite remarkable, covering the shrub in a dense and colourful mantle of bloom that makes a bold and cheerful contribution to the spring garden. The compact, rounded, and well-branched habit is clothed in attractive, mid to dark green evergreen foliage of good substance that provides a neat and tidy year-round presence, making 'Van' as useful as a structural evergreen shrub as it is spectacular as a spring-flowering specimen. Its manageable size and tidy habit make it particularly well suited to smaller gardens, mixed ericaceous borders, and container cultivation in a generous pot of ericaceous compost on a shaded terrace or courtyard.

Other benefits: exceptionally prolific spring flowering; compact and neatly rounded habit suitable for smaller gardens; attractive year-round evergreen foliage; well suited to container cultivation; reliable and easy to grow in appropriate acid soil conditions

Wildlife attraction: bumblebees and other large-bodied pollinators

Height & spread (approx.) at 10 years: 1.2m x 1.2m

Position: partial shade preferred; dappled woodland light is ideal; shelter from cold, drying winds and strong midday sun which can scorch the foliage; avoid frost pockets where late frosts may damage emerging flower trusses

Soil pH: requires acid soil; pH 4.5–6.0; will not tolerate alkaline or chalky conditions; benefits from the incorporation of ericaceous compost and composted bark at planting; water with collected rainwater in hard water areas

Moisture: regular watering required, particularly when establishing and during dry spells; prefers consistently moist but well-drained, humus-rich, acid soil; a deep mulch of composted bark helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and maintain soil acidity; avoid waterlogging

Winter hardiness: hardy to approximately -15°C; flower buds may be damaged by late spring frosts; no protection required for the plant itself in most UK regions
