Wisteria frutescens 'Longwood Purple'
Wisteria frutescens 'Longwood Purple'
Common name: American Wisteria 'Longwood Purple'
Description: This exceptional American wisteria cultivar offers all the beauty of Asian wisterias but with a more manageable, less aggressive growth habit. In late spring to early summer, the plant produces abundant cascading racemes of fragrant, rich purple-blue pea-like flowers that can reach up to 15cm in length. Unlike its more vigorous cousins, 'Longwood Purple' blooms reliably on young plants and often provides a bonus flush of flowers in mid to late summer. The pinnate foliage emerges bright green in spring and provides an attractive backdrop throughout the growing season. This cultivar is ideal for training over pergolas, arbours, and walls where a more controlled climbing plant is desired.
Other benefits: fragrant flowers, repeat flowering in summer, less invasive than Asian species, flowers on young plants, suitable for containers
Wildlife attraction: bees, butterflies, hummingbird hawk-moths, pollinators
Height & spread (approx.) at 10 years: 4m x 3m
Position: full sun to partial shade; best flowering in full sun with roots in shade
Soil pH: adaptable; prefers neutral to slightly acidic soils but tolerates slightly alkaline conditions
Moisture: moderate watering required; prefers consistently moist but well-drained soil; benefits from mulching
Winter hardiness: fully hardy to -20°C and below
