Allium 'Miami'
Common name: Miami Ornamental Onion
Description: This spectacular ornamental allium produces impressive large, spherical flowerheads in late spring to early summer, creating dramatic focal points in the garden. 'Miami' features densely packed, star-shaped flowers in rich purple-violet hues that form perfect globes atop sturdy, upright stems. The strap-like, blue-green foliage emerges in early spring before the flowers appear, though the leaves begin to fade as the blooms reach their peak. After flowering, the attractive seed heads provide continued architectural interest and can be left for winter structure or harvested for dried flower arrangements. The bulbs naturalise well, forming impressive colonies over time.
Other benefits: excellent cut flower and dried flower, deer and rabbit resistant, low maintenance once established
Wildlife attraction: bees, butterflies, and other pollinators are strongly attracted to the nectar-rich flowers
Height & spread (approx.) at 10 years: 80cm x 15cm (individual stems), spreads gradually by bulb division
Position: full sun preferred; tolerates light shade but flowering may be reduced
Soil pH: adaptable to most soil conditions; performs well in neutral to slightly alkaline soils
Moisture: moderate water during growing season; requires good drainage; drought tolerant when dormant
Winter hardiness: cold hardy to -25°C; bulbs remain dormant underground through winter
