Amelanchier x grandiflora 'Robin Hill'
Common name: Snowy Mespilus 'Robin Hill' / Juneberry 'Robin Hill'
Description: Amelanchier x grandiflora 'Robin Hill' is an exceptionally ornamental small tree or large multi-stemmed shrub that delivers a remarkable succession of seasonal interest throughout the year, making it one of the most rewarding choices for the British garden. In early spring, the bare branches are smothered in clusters of delicate, soft pink buds that open to blush-pink flowers — a subtler and particularly elegant variation on the more commonly seen white-flowered Amelanchiers — providing a breathtaking display and a vital early nectar source for bees and other emerging pollinators. The young foliage unfurls simultaneously in attractive bronze-copper tones before maturing to a fresh mid-green through summer. In early summer, small round berries ripen from red through to deep purple-black, and whilst modest in size, they are sweet and edible, greatly enjoyed by blackbirds, thrushes, and other garden birds. The season concludes with a spectacular autumn finale as the foliage ignites in fiery shades of orange, red, and crimson before leaf fall, ensuring 'Robin Hill' earns its place in the garden from the first days of spring to the last of autumn.
Other benefits: outstanding four-season interest; soft pink spring blossom; edible summer berries; fiery autumn colour; suitable for smaller gardens; tolerates a wide range of conditions
Wildlife attraction: bees, hoverflies, butterflies, blackbirds, thrushes, and other berry-feeding birds
Height & spread (approx.) at 10 years: 4m x 3m
Position: full sun to partial shade; autumn colour is most vivid in a sunny position
Soil pH: performs best in neutral to acid soils; avoid thin, dry chalky soils; pH 5.5–7.0
Moisture: moderate watering required, particularly when establishing; prefers moisture-retentive but well-drained soil; tolerates heavier clay soils
Winter hardiness: fully hardy to approximately -20°C; no winter protection required in the UK
