Aralia elata 'Variegata'
Common name: Japanese Angelica Tree 'Variegata'
Description: Aralia elata 'Variegata' is a truly spectacular large deciduous shrub or small tree, producing enormous compound leaves edged and irregularly splashed with creamy-white variegation that creates a dramatic, almost tropical effect in the garden. In late summer it bears large, frothy panicles of small white flowers at the branch tips, followed by dark berries. The overall impression is deeply architectural — few hardy plants offer such bold, exotic impact. The spiny stems and tiered branching structure give it considerable winter character even after leaf fall. A genuinely exceptional garden plant for a statement position.
Other benefits: exceptionally bold architectural foliage; dramatic cream-variegated leaves; attractive late-summer flowers and berries; strong winter stem structure
Wildlife attraction: bees and other pollinating insects; berries attractive to birds in autumn
Height & spread (approx.) at 10 years: 3–4m x 3m
Position: full sun to partial shade; sheltered from strong winds which can damage the large leaves; effective as a specimen in a lawn or border
Soil pH: neutral to acid (pH 5.5–7.0); fertile, well-drained but moisture-retentive soil
Moisture: moderate; water well until established; mulch to retain moisture
Winter hardiness: fully hardy to -20°C
