Brunnera macrophylla 'Silver Heart'
Common name: Siberian Bugloss 'Silver Heart'
Description: Brunnera macrophylla 'Silver Heart' is a beautiful and highly ornamental shade-loving perennial producing large, heart-shaped leaves that are almost entirely covered in a bright silver overlay, with just a fine network of green veining remaining visible. In spring the plant produces a delicate haze of small, vivid blue forget-me-not flowers above the emerging foliage — a combination of silver and blue that is particularly charming and elegant. The bold, silvery leaves then provide excellent ground cover and foliage interest throughout the remainder of the growing season, making this one of the most valuable perennials for shaded and partially shaded borders.
Other benefits: outstanding silver foliage for a long season; charming spring blue flowers; excellent weed-suppressing ground cover in shade; combines beautifully with hostas and ferns
Wildlife attraction: bees and other pollinating insects attracted to the spring flowers
Height & spread (approx.) at 10 years: 40–45cm x 45–60cm
Position: partial shade to full shade; shaded borders, woodland gardens, and underplanting; protect from strong midday sun which scorches the foliage
Soil pH: neutral to slightly acid (pH 5.5–7.0); moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil; mulch annually to retain moisture
Moisture: moderate to moist; keep consistently moist; avoid allowing to dry out, especially in summer
Winter hardiness: fully hardy to -20°C
