Carpinus betulus
Common name: Hornbeam
Description: Carpinus betulus, the Common Hornbeam, is one of Britain's most versatile and handsome native trees, with a long and distinguished history in the British landscape. Naturally forming a broadly spreading, oval-crowned tree, it is perhaps most widely encountered as a hedging and screening plant, where its dense, twiggy growth creates an exceptionally effective barrier that retains its attractive, russet-brown dead leaves throughout winter — a characteristic known as marcescence — providing privacy and wind protection even when deciduous. In spring, fresh, prominently veined, ovate leaves emerge in a vivid lime-green before deepening to rich mid-green through summer. Pendulous catkins appear in spring alongside the emerging foliage, offering an early pollen source for bees. In autumn, the foliage transitions through warm shades of yellow and orange before the characteristic dead leaves take hold for the winter months. The smooth, grey, fluted trunk and branches develop a muscular, sinuous quality with age, giving mature specimens a striking architectural character. Hornbeam is equally at home as a formal pleached screen, a traditional hedge, or allowed to develop freely as a specimen tree in larger gardens and parkland settings.
Other benefits: native British tree with excellent wildlife value; retains dead leaves through winter for year-round screening; superb for hedging, pleaching, and formal topiary; extremely adaptable to a wide range of soils including heavy clay
Wildlife attraction: bees, moths, caterpillars, woodpeckers, nuthatches, hawfinches, small mammals
Height & spread (approx.) at 10 years: 8m x 6m as a specimen tree; easily maintained at any height as a hedge or pleached screen
Position: full sun to full shade; one of the most shade-tolerant hedging trees available
Soil pH: highly adaptable; performs well in neutral to slightly alkaline soils; pH 6.0–8.0
Moisture: moderate watering when establishing; tolerates periods of drought once established; excellent on heavy, wet clay soils where many other trees struggle
Winter hardiness: fully hardy to approximately -20°C; no winter protection required anywhere in the UK
