Farfugium japonicum
Common name: Leopard plant
Description: An eye-catching evergreen perennial grown chiefly for its bold, glossy, kidney-shaped leaves that form a dense, low clump. From late autumn into early winter, clusters of bright yellow, daisy-like flowers rise above the foliage on branching stems, adding welcome colour at a quiet time of year.
Other benefits: low maintenance, year-round foliage interest, good for shaded borders, suits woodland and pondside planting, useful container plant
Wildlife attraction: Its late-season flowers provide a useful nectar source for bees and other pollinators when little else is in bloom.
Height & spread (approx.) at 10 years: 60cm x 60cm
Position: Best in partial to full shade and sheltered from cold, drying winds; will tolerate more sun if the soil stays consistently moist.
Soil pH: Acid to neutral, but tolerant of alkaline conditions too; adapts well to clay, loam, chalky or sandy soils provided they are fertile.
Moisture: Prefers moist, humus-rich, free-draining soil and dislikes drying out, so water well in dry spells.
Winter hardiness: Slightly tender; hardy to around -5°C (RHS H3) in sheltered or coastal gardens — provide a deep mulch or fleece protection in colder areas.
