Penstemon varieties
Common name: Penstemon
Description: Penstemons are among the most reliable and long-flowering of all hardy border perennials, producing elegant tubular flowers in a rich palette of colours — from deep crimson, wine-red, and purple through to soft pink, lilac, and pure white — on upright, wiry stems from midsummer through to the first frosts. The semi-evergreen foliage provides a degree of winter structure, and many varieties are surprisingly hardy once established, particularly if given a warm, sheltered position with excellent drainage. They are ideal companions for late-season bulbs, grasses, and other late-flowering perennials in a mixed border.
Other benefits: exceptionally long flowering season, wide colour range, semi-evergreen, good for cutting, suitable for containers
Wildlife attraction: bees, bumblebees, and hoverflies are regularly attracted to the tubular flowers throughout summer and autumn
Height & spread (approx.) at 10 years: 0.6–0.9m x 0.5m depending on variety
