Common name: Platt's Black New Zealand Flax

Description: Phormium 'Platt's Black' is one of the darkest and most dramatically coloured of all ornamental phormiums, a compact and beautifully refined cultivar that has become highly sought-after by garden designers and plantspeople for the exceptional depth and intensity of its near-black to very deep purple-black foliage — a colouring so dark and saturated that it creates a striking and almost theatrical visual effect in the garden that few other hardy plants can replicate. The long, narrow, arching, strap-like leaves are a genuinely deep, lustrous blackish-purple that appears to absorb light rather than reflect it, creating a dramatic shadowing and receding quality in the border that is extraordinarily effective as a contrast to brighter foliage colours, pale flowers, and silvery or golden-leaved plants. The combination of this exceptional foliage colour with the naturally compact and manageable habit of 'Platt's Black' makes it one of the most versatile and design-friendly phormiums available, equally at home as a bold focal point in a mixed border, a key structural element in a contemporary or minimalist garden scheme, a container specimen for a dark-themed terrace or courtyard planting, or as a striking companion to brightly coloured dahlias, cannas, and other late-summer performers where its near-black foliage provides an unrivalled dramatic foil. The upright, fan-shaped clumps maintain their striking dark colouring and neat architectural form throughout the year, providing a year-round presence of quiet but compelling distinction.

Other benefits: exceptionally dark near-black to deep purple-black foliage of outstanding colour intensity; compact and manageable habit ideal for smaller gardens and containers; bold architectural form with year-round evergreen presence; outstanding as a foil to brightly coloured flowers and pale or golden foliage; excellent in contemporary, minimalist, and dark-themed garden schemes; good coastal tolerance

Wildlife attraction: bees and nectar-feeding insects when in flower

Height & spread (approx.) at 10 years: 1m x 0.8m

Position: full sun preferred for deepest and most intense foliage colouring; tolerates partial shade though colour may be slightly less saturated; excellent in coastal and exposed gardens; a sheltered position is beneficial in colder inland regions

Soil pH: adaptable; performs well in neutral to slightly acid soils; pH 6.0–7.0; reasonable drainage is important, particularly in winter

Moisture: moderate watering when establishing; tolerates drought reasonably well once established; prefers well-drained soil; avoid prolonged waterlogging in winter which represents the greatest risk to this plant in UK conditions

Winter hardiness: hardy to approximately -8°C to -10°C in well-drained conditions; may sustain some foliage damage in the hardest winters but will often regenerate from the base; benefits from a dry mulch over the crown in colder inland regions; container-grown plants should be moved under cover during prolonged hard frosts
