Viburnum plicatum f. tomentosum 'Watanabe'
Viburnum plicatum f. tomentosum 'Watanabe'
Common name: Watanabe Doublefile Viburnum
Description: This outstanding compact viburnum is celebrated for its elegant tiered branching structure and spectacular spring display. In late spring to early summer, the horizontal branches become adorned with flat lacecap flower clusters that sit along the branches like layers of white lace, creating a stunning architectural effect. The sterile outer florets surround small fertile flowers in the centre, which develop into red berries that mature to black by autumn. The textured, deeply veined leaves emerge fresh green and take on attractive burgundy and purple tones in autumn. 'Watanabe' has a naturally compact, layered habit that requires minimal pruning. This cultivar also offers the bonus of occasional repeat flowering in late summer, extending the season of interest considerably.
Other benefits: architectural tiered branching, spectacular spring flowering, repeat blooming in summer, stunning autumn foliage, compact habit, low maintenance
Wildlife attraction: bees, butterflies, pollinators, birds (berries provide food)
Height & spread (approx.) at 10 years: 1.5m x 2m
Position: full sun to partial shade; best flowering and autumn colour in full sun
Soil pH: adaptable; prefers neutral to slightly acidic soils but tolerates slightly alkaline conditions
Moisture: moderate watering; prefers consistently moist but well-drained soil; benefits from mulching
Winter hardiness: fully hardy to -20°C and below
